report cards

YAY!  My report cards are done!  I've had a busy couple of weeks.  My 16 year old daughter had all 4 wisdom teeth out early last week.  Because they were impacted, she had a LOT of pain.  I was hoping to get most of my reports done while I was home looking after her but she was in too much pain so I pampered her instead.  Last weekend was busy with hockey and then Monday, my son and I can down with the flu.  I went to work on Monday but stayed home Tuesday and slept all day.  Went to work on Wednesday but had to stay home again today with no voice and nasty cough.  The only positive part was that I managed to finish my reports today.  Yay!  When does everyone have their reports due?

Parent Teacher interviews

Well, we just completed our parent-teacher interviews today.  They went extremely well but I must say that I am happy that they are done.  They were exhausting!  As a school, we decided this year to do interviews with all of our parents (in the past, we had just had the interviews with families where there were concerns).  I loved it!  It was so nice to be able to tell parents that "yes, your child is doing a fantastic job in the classroom!"
We're studying dinosaurs in the classroom right now and having tons of fun.  Here is a little alphabetical order freebie to share.  Click here for the download.

Guided Reading was our first day of Guided Reading.  I have not been able to begin it before now as I was helping out another teacher who had a difficult split class.  I've been taking her Grade ones and there have just been too many kids in the classroom.  Now that they have a routine, they are back in their own classroom.  YAY!  They were sweet kids but it was just too chaotic.  Anyways, LA was awesome today.  The stress that I was feeling is gone completely!
For my guided reading, I have 4 groups.  One group works with me; one does a listening centre story and activity; one completes a word work activity; and the last does something with sight words.
I tried Daily 5 last year and ended up with a hybrid of it this year as there were lots of things that I liked; and others that I wasn't crazy about.  We still "read to self", "read to others", do "word work", "listen to reading" and "work on writing" but I don't call it the daily 5 and I make sure that the kids do each of these rather than giving them all free reign.
So happy to have things back on track in my classroom.

I'd like to replace Facebook with teaching blogs to be more accurate.......Can anyone relate?

October is flying by!

I can't believe how fast this month is going!  We completed our study on spiders this past week and we're moving on to bats.  Love those two themes and lotsa blogs have goodies out there for the two topics.  I don't think I made anything for my spider unit....everything was off of the first grade blogs.  WooHoo.....gotta love that!
I've had a bit of chaos in my classroom for my Language Arts program.....I won't go into details but I'm so excited to get things back on track this week.  Starting my Guided Reading program this week.  Yay!  Love guided reading!  I've got my groups all set up and on to figuring where I'm going to go with it this week.
A freebie for today is some "caught being good" tickets.

Grab it here.

Can anyone help me with pinterest?  I pinned pictures of my pages that I posted before but can't get them to link back to this site.  Does anyone know how to do that?  I've just been copying the URL from the picture properties but it hasn't included my website address.  HELPPPPP!
Well, I'm just plugging along!  I've made up quite a few pages in the past few weeks for my LA curriculum but frankly, not sure if I should bother to share them.  I'm not sure if they would  be useful to anyone out there.  I'll put a couple on here and see if anyone uses them.  If you do find them useful, please let me know and I'll continue to add some here.  Here is the link!

Anyways, I had a wonderfully relaxing long weekend and managed to get 30 something pages of morning work (work that my kids do as they enter the classroom and get ready for the day) done.  Hoping to maybe get it onto TPT but might need to add some more to it first.
Have a great evening!

Saturday, September 15, 2012

Okay.....I'm rocking at this blog thing....ha, ha!  10 days since I last posted.  I always forget how tiring the first couple of weeks are but my little honeys are starting to settle down to their routines now.  We've had hockey tryouts in the meantime and with trying to make sure that I am keeping up my workouts, I've had no time at all to be on here.  Introduced Pete the Cat yesterday and the kids that hadn't heard it before loved it as expected.  My kids from last year (I have 7) still love it of course.  So we'll be doing some activities with it on Monday.  Leslie at The Groovy Teacher had a post that has come at a perfect time with a wonderful freebie.  Click here to go and grab it!   Anyways, have a great weekend and I will attempt to get on here more!

first full day

OMG....first full day and I'm exhausted!  It's amazing how we forget every year how very tiring start up is.....I'm ready for a nap.  Anyways, for those of you with a September start, how are you feeling?

I've got a nice group but it amazes me how much more room a couple of extra kids take up (I had 21 K/1s last year and this year I have 23 Grade 1s).  I'm already so enjoying not having the split this year.

Have a great evening!

Freebie.....or, at least an attempt at it!

Okay, I'm trying this out!  I made some word wall words that go with the Primary Success Sight Reading 1 program as a freebie.  I hope I have linked it properly but this is my test.  Even if you don't use Primary Success, you could find this useful!

I'm happy that I finally remembered my camera so that I could share this with you!  I still need to do my hallway bulletin board with some welcoming info.

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

It's been over a week since I last posted.  My son has been in hockey school during that time as well as my daughter and I were out of town for the weekend.  I've done quite a bit in my classroom and have done some more planning.  Two weeks until we are back in the classroom!  Anyways, I'll post photos as soon as I remember to bring my camera!

Sunday, August 12, 2012

I was in the classroom this evening (better than sitting watching TV, I figured).  Anyways, I managed to get quite a bit done.  of course, I forgot to take photos so I'll have to take them next time I go in.  I've gotten my year plan laid out and I'm getting closer to being ready.  one thing that I did get finished was a first week of school frame.  I made it so I can take the word "first" off and replace it with "last".  I knew there would be no way I could do the photos on the first day so I made it week instead of day.

 Anyways, have a great night!

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Well, I managed to get into the classroom yesterday for a short while.  My carpets were being washed today so I wasn't able to rearrange any furniture but I did manage to get my reading corner wall started.  Here is how I left it.
I need to continue with it next week but have to wait for my carpets to dry.  I'm just excited to get working on it.
on a sad side, when I went in I discovered that my paper mache tree had obviously been knocked over at some point.  one branch, a root and one of the leaf umbrellas were broken.  Thank goodness I went in early as I'll have to try to patch it up.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Hello!  It feels like it's been so long since I've written.  We were away for the long weekend (it was BC day in British Columbia).  I finally was able to get my laptop in to get looked at today and hope to have it fixed in the next week or so.  I am getting really tired of using our old laptop (it doesn't print any "o"s so every time I write an o, I have to paste it in......UGH).  Anyways, I'm also waiting for my other laptop so I can get some work done.
Hopefully tomorrow I can get into my classroom and begin setting up.  I'll take some photos if I manage to get in (it amazes me how I can get busy doing little things around the house).
Anyways, have a great night!

Friday, August 3, 2012

Well, I managed to get my word wall words typed, laminated, and cut yesterday.  If any of you use Primary Success, they are the words from Sight Words 1.  I am hoping to figure out how to save them as a PDF today so that I can share.
Managed to get my READ letters done as well.  This has been on my to do list since last summer.  Here is a photo!  I love them!
Anyways, if you get a chance, go check out Nikki's latest projects over at Melonheadz Illustrations (see her site on my right hand bar).  She's having a sale this weekend!  Yay!

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Well, the past few days haven't been too eventful!  I did manage to find some material for my reading corner, as well as a cute grass table skirt.  The jungle theme is coming into focus.
I managed to get my own kids' school supplies yesterday.  Today was cleaning day at my house so tomorrow I'll be happy to plug away at school work.  Have a great night!

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Well, I've gotten started on my reading corner makeover.  Yesterday, I began my fabric mural for the area and I finished it up this morning (I'm putting off doing my 2nd tree because I remember how much work it was last year...ha, ha).  Anyways, wanted to show a photo.
Don't mind the's my garage!  Anyways, I'll show you what it looks like in the classroom when I get it all set up.

Friday, July 27, 2012

I don't know about you but for me, this summer is flying by.  I spent the first few weeks scrapbooking to catch up on the fun that I didn't have time for during the school year.  Now it's time to start thinking about school.  It sounds like our classrooms should be ready sometime next week.  I want to make my reading corner a bit more elaborate this year (that's where my "tree" is).  Anyways, I'm looking forward to begin setting it up.
I have tables in my classroom.  Does anyone else out there in First Grade use tables?  If so, how do you manage supplies?  Each of my students had a bin on the back bookshelf this year but I'm trying to think of other ways to manage it?  Any ideas?

Getting to know new people

It's exciting to see how many fellow teachers I am meeting through this linky party!  Jenny from Mrs. Brown's Blog was kind enough to award me the Liebster Award.
Here is what I need to do now:
1. Link back to the person who gave you the award. DONE!
2. Post the award to your blog. DONE!
3. Give the award to at least 5 bloggers with fewer than 200 followers.
Here are the blogs that I would like to give this award to:
Moore News
An Apple for the Teacher
Adventures in Third Grade
Tales from Rm. 17
Starring in First Grade
Great blogs, ladies!
I was excited to receive an award this morning when I got up but as I'm so new to the blogging world, it has taken me all day to find other blogs to award it to......ha, ha!  I'm hoping that this becomes easier with time.  Anyways, thank you to Catherine at Kinder Cuties

Anyways, here is what I needed to do:
  1. Follow the person who gave me the award.
  2. Link back to the person that gave me the award. ✓
  3. Pass to 5 new bloggers and let them know they have received the award.
I chose the following blogs:
Mrs. Kelly's Klass
PJ Jots
Craft of Teaching
Mrs. Brown's Blog
Polka Dot Firsties

Hi everyone!  I'm a real newbie at this blog thing as I have just started mine!  This newbie linky party was started by Janis over at Grade Three is the Place for Me.  I'm excited to see so many others just beginning this adventure like me and hopefully, I'll be able to make some new connections this way!
We are supposed to answer the following questions:

1. what state you are in
I actually live in British Columbia, Canada
2. your current teaching position
I teach Grade 1.  After having a split Kindergarten and Grade 1 class last year, I'm really looking forward to having a straight class.

3. your teaching experience
I have been teaching a variety of Grades over the past 16 years. I've been a Teacher on Call, learning assistance teacher, and have taught at every Grade level from Kindergarten to Grade Five.
4. when you started blogging
I've had a personal blog in the past but just started this blog yesterday.
 5. share a blogging tip / blogging resource
There are some amazing blogs out there with tons of remarkable information.....STALK!

Shout out!

While I'm at it, I need to do a shout out to Nikki at Melonheadz.  I have been using her clipart on my teaching papers for the past year and think they are adorable!  If you haven't seen them, check it out.  Her button is under the Blogs I Stalk!

This past year

This past year I had a Kindergarten/Grade 1 classroom.  It was the district's first year of full day kindergarten and it was challenging to combine the two levels.  We all had a great year but it was a lot more work on my part.  This upcoming year, I am excited to be teaching a straight one class.  I chose to keep my Ks for their Grade one year (there are only 7 of them) so my plan for the next month is to come up with some fun-filled new themes that they won't have seen!
Last year, some of our large themes were plants, oceans, butterflies, Canada, beavers and snow.  Any ideas out there for some exciting new themes?  I'm thinking dinosaurs (was on my list for this year but I ran out of time) and pirates.

I'm going to begin working on another paper mache tree for my classroom.  The one I made last year was a huge success so I think I should have a pair.  Here is a photo:
This was taken in the spring when we had blossoms on the tree.  In the winter we took out the umbrellas so that we had a "naked" tree.  It was neat to discuss how trees look different in the varying seasons when we could look at ours to compare.
Anyways, have a great day!

A New Beginning

Hi everyone!  I've been wanting to start my own teaching blog for quite a while but in the meantime, have made myself happy by stalking other blogs! it is!  Thank you to the wonderful ladies at The Honey Bunch for creating my beautiful blog!
